Understanding NoRust: A Guide to Our Anti-Corrosion Products

In the fight against corrosion, selecting the right protection solution is crucial for the longevity and integrity of metal structures, especially in harsh corrosive environments. The corrosion mechanism of various materials depends on the type of electrical conductivity at the material-environment phase boundary and the nature of the environment.

This article explores our anti-corrosion range: Zinc Tapes, Petrolatum Tapes and ActiveShield Tapes, outlining their key differences, advantages and particular fields of application.

AS60 NoRust Petrolatum Tapes

Petrolatum tapes are composed of synthetic fabric impregnated with specially developed petrolatum compounds with a pleasant smell. Enriched with corrosion inhibitors, NoRust Tape continually affects the treated surface, preventing moisture and air from reaching the metal and initiating the corrosion process. They offer passive corrosion protection.

AS60 NoRust Petrolatum Tapes are popular for underground pipe installations, applied directly to pipes and often covered with a protective plastic film, AS62 NoRust Cover, to guard against mechanical damage.

ADVANTAGES:

For Complex Shapes: Petrolatum tapes adhere well especially to irregular shapes and surfaces, providing effective coverage and protection.

Waterproofing: They provide excellent moisture resistance, creating a barrier that prevents water ingress and soil corrosion.

APPLICATION:

  • Suitable for the anti-corrosive protection of T-joints, flanges, muff joints, pipe fittings, valves, pipe crossings, welded connection points and marine and offshore structures exposed to salt water.

AS63 NoRust Zinc Tapes

AS63 Zinc Tapes is an easy-to-apply corrosion control coating system ensuring cathodic protection of metal structures. The AS63 tapes are composed of a thin zinc layer with electro-conductive adhesive applied to a steel substrate. They offer both active and passive corrosion protection.

ADVANTAGES:

Active Corrosion Protection: Zinc, being more electrochemically active than steel, acts as a sacrificial anode. This prevents the formation of small anodic and cathodic regions on the metal surface, significantly reducing the development and spread of corrosion. This means the zinc tape corrodes or sacrifices itself to protect the metal surface beneath it, thereby extending its lifespan and maintaining its integrity.

Passive Corrosion Protection: Passive protection is achieved through a homogenous coating that adheres to the surface, helping to prevent air and water penetration.

APPLICATIONS:

  • Suitable for above-ground pipelines, port structures, docks, piers, bridges, storage tanks, car hinges, doors and chassis in automotive industry, traction poles and power poles – mainly at their base, which is particularly sensitive to corrosion.

Zinc Tapes are used in refineries and petrochemical plants where difficult environmental conditions create a high risk of corrosion. This method is a good alternative in areas where traditional methods, such as anti-corrosive painting, cannot be performed due to the inability of proper surface preparation, including sandblasting.

The AS63 Zinc Tape, while offering superior corrosion protection, has lower resistance to mechanical damage. Therefore, it is more popular for external elements and above-ground installations.

AS66 NoRust ActiveShield Tape

It is an effective anti-corrosion solution providing cathodic protection, reinforced with a bituminous membrane, designed for extreme fields of applications. This system involves a zinc layer for active protection and an outer bitumen layer for passive protection.

This new version of Zinc Tape includes an additional outer protective layer based on petrolatum and HDPE film, allowing for new applications compared to the AS63 Zinc Tape. AS66 Tape combines the benefits of the petrolatum and zinc tapes, offering superior protection over previous solutions.

ADVANTAGES:

Dual Active-passive Corrosion Protection:  ActiveShield Tape uses the properties of zinc to maintain the active protection of a sacrificial anode, likewise AS63 Zinc Tape, meaning the zinc will corrode in place of the underlying metal. However, unlike the Zinc Tape, ActiveShield Tape is reinforced with an outer protective bitumen layer, providing enhanced protection against mechanical damage.

Bituminous Barrier: This layer acts as a physical protection and a sealant against mechanical damage and moisture, so that the metal element is well protected, especially in extreme environments and underground structures. This design ensures a long-lasting protection against corrosion, ensuring tightness and durability.

Enhanced Durability: Combining both active and passive methods, with a bitumen membrane over the zinc layer, results in a highly durable solution for the most demanding environments.

APPLICATION:

  • Suitable for underground storage tanks, underground pipelines, steel poles for city lighting, connections between above and underground structures, transmission towers, especially at ground level where moisture exposure is highest.

Conclusion

Choosing the appropriate anti-corrosion solution depends on the specific requirements of a project, including the environment, application method and longevity needed. Zinc tapes are ideal for above-ground structures in various atmospheric conditions. Petrolatum tapes offer versatile and easy-to-apply passive protection, excellent for complex underground structures. ActiveShield Tape provides an effective dual-protection approach, ensuring maximum durability and corrosion resistance in the harshest environments.

By understanding these differences, you can make an informed decision to protect your assets effectively against corrosion, extending their service life and reducing maintenance costs.
